Why so many downloads are WebP now

Google's WebP format is 25–35% smaller than JPG and PNG, so most large websites serve it automatically. The browser handles it fine, but when you save an image to your computer, the file keeps the .webp extension and older programs, some CMS uploaders, Word and PowerPoint refuse it or show a broken icon.

PNG is the right target when the image has transparency, text or flat colors, such as logos, icons and screenshots, because it is lossless. For photographs, choose JPG instead; a PNG of a photo can be five times larger than the WebP you started with.

Animated WebP

Animated WebP files convert to a single PNG of the first frame. If you need the animation, keep the original file or use a dedicated video tool; PNG has no animation support that mainstream apps read.

Frequently asked questions

Will the PNG be larger than the WebP?

Usually yes: PNG is lossless. For photos, convert to JPG instead to keep the size down.

Does transparency survive?

Yes when converting to PNG or WebP. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas become white.

Can I convert PNG to WebP the other way?

Yes. Use the main converter and choose WebP as the output.
