Why iPhones save HEIC
Since iOS 11, iPhones store photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) because it holds the same picture in about half the space of a JPG. The catch is compatibility: Windows needs a paid codec, older Android phones and many web forms cannot read it, and email attachments often arrive as un-openable files.
This converter decodes HEIC with a WebAssembly build of libheif, the same open-source library used by many desktop apps, then saves a standard JPG. The decoder downloads once (about 3 MB) and is cached.
Quality: keep it high for HEIC
HEIC files are already compressed, so converting to JPG is a second compression. The default here is 88, which keeps the result indistinguishable from the original on screen and in ordinary prints. Drop to 75 only if you need the smallest possible file for a form upload.
Live Photos and burst shots convert to a single still frame. Photos taken in portrait mode keep their orientation because the converter reads the rotation flag before drawing.
Stop the problem at the source
If you regularly share photos with Windows or Android users, set your iPhone to shoot JPG instead: Settings, Camera, Formats, then choose Most Compatible. You lose about half the storage efficiency but never need to convert again. Alternatively keep HEIC and turn on Settings, Photos, Transfer to Mac or PC, Automatic, which converts when you copy over a cable.

- Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?
- Slightly, because JPG is a second lossy compression. At quality 85 or higher the difference is not visible on screen.
